Arundo donax 'Golden Chain'

Common Name: Giant Reed, Ornamental Grass

This selection boasts brighter gold and green striped foliage and a smaller, less aggressive habit than the species.  The vibrant color also lasts all season, unlike ‘Variegata’ which tends to fade.

This smaller form is in much better scale with today’s average suburban landscape, reaching 5-6’ tall in the north and 7’ tall in the south.  The showy foliage is great for adding tropical flare to the landscape.

Here in Michigan, our growing season is typically not long enough to see this grass bloom before frost.  However, showy copper panicles are produced in mid-fall in the south.

This grass has overwintered well for us here in Michigan over the past few years.  However, we have had very reliable snow cover and a bit more mild temperatures than typical.  To be safe, we will list this grass as a zone 6 though you may find it to be hardier.
