Though it may look similar to ‘Burning Hearts’ at first glance, once you grow the new ‘Fire Island’ you’ll understand the difference. You’ll quickly appreciate ‘Fire Island’ for its more vigorous growth rate, bushier habit, earlier flowering, and increased flower production. This sun loving alpine type of bleeding heart has been extremely popular since its introduction into the US.

Flaming magenta red, heart-shaped flowers with white tips are produced in clusters above the very finely textured, frosty blue foliage from late spring into midsummer. Two added bonuses with this new selection: it is more disease resistant and does not produce seed, helping it to bloom longer into summer.

Dicentra 'Fire Island' is different from the other bleeding hearts you may be familiar with in that it is not a woodland plant. It is from high elevations in cool climates and it can grow in full sun there, much like an alpine. It will not grow well in heavy clay soils and does not need deep, moist soils like most Dicentras. Give this one more sun than you would typically give a Dicentra and you will be rewarded with stronger growth and more flowers.
