Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious' PP17977

Common Name: Pineapple Sage

Totally unlike the hardy perennial salvias we offer, this large temperennial can be used as a hedge, as a filler for the back of the border, or in very large containers.  This plant will surely become a staple of your border after trying it just once.  It grows to form a good sized clump of radiantly colored foliage, adding a punch of color to the landscape and blending effortlessly with all of its neighbors.

Bright yellow to chartreuse colored leaves (brighter yellow in more sun) have the delicious scent of pineapple when crushed.  Though many people enjoy the taste of both its foliage and flowers in salads and teas, deer typically leave it alone.

Butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy the nectar of its fire engine red flowers which appear very late in the season, in early to mid-fall where the growing season is long enough.  The flowers are similar in color to the annual red-flowered Salvia but are not quite as showy.

In areas where this plant is not hardy, it can be overwintered indoors in containers.
