This month, the spotlight is shining bright on...
A Walters Gardens Exclusive Introduction!
Russian sage has long been recognized as an excellent perennial for hot, dry climates. Until recently however, the only cultivars that were available grew quite large and tended to flop over in the garden and in container production. Cultivars that were labeled as "little" turned out to be not so little after all.
Walters Gardens, a wholesale perennial grower and hybridizing company in Zeeland, Michigan, has been working to develop and introduce more well-behaved Perovskias. 'Rocketman', pictured here, is certainly one of their very best.
'Rocketman' Perovskia is a shorter selection with strongly upright stems that don't flop over as the plant matures. It is a vigorous grower in container production, having a much neater appearance in the pot. In the garden, it is very well-behaved, offering many weeks of color beginning midsummer. Large, fluffy textured, lavender blue flowers appear along the silvery stems lined with non-dissected, grey-green foliage. Like all Perovskias, the flowers have colorful calyxes which retain their color long after the flowers themselves have dropped, extending the show into fall.
Perovskia combines well in the landscape with Echinaceas, black-eyed Susans, ornamental grasses, garden mums, tickseed, and baby's breath.
Height: 2 1/2-3ft Spread: 2 1/2 - 3 1/2ft Hardy in zones 4-9
Garden Culture: Perovskia is considered to be a woody perennial or subshrub. It is ideal for hot, dry climates. Grow it in full sun and average soil with dry to average moisture. Few pests or diseases bother Perovskia. If you feel pruning is necessary, do so in spring by trimming the stems down to just above the lowest bud.
***Perovskia a. 'Rocketman' will be first available at retail in Spring 2015.
